Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the means to earn commission by virtue of marketing products from someone else/ some company. The affiliate – the one responsible for the marketing activity - simply searches for a product they enjoy, then promote the same in lieu of earning a piece of the profit from each sale made thereafter. The sales get tracked through affiliate links from one website to another.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

Affiliate Marketing is putting to use and using to your advantage the capabilities of a variety of individuals for efficient marketing strategies while providing them a share of the profit. The responsibilities of product marketing and creating, get shared across both parties – the client and the contributor.

Seller and product creators

The seller may be a solo entrepreneur or a large enterprise, a vendor/merchant/retailer or a product creator. The product to be promoted can be a variety of objects, like household goods, or services like makeup tutorials. The seller/ brand does not need to be actively involved in the marketing, but they have the option to be the advertiser; thus, they might profit from the revenue sharing associated with said affiliate marketing.

The affiliate or publisher

The affiliate a.k.a the publisher is an entity (individual or company) that markets the seller’s product to potential consumers using methods that are known to convert. So, the affiliate promote the product and tries to persuade consumers of its value or benefits. If they are successful in persuading the consumer to buy the product, the affiliate receives a portion of the revenue made.

Affiliates are known to have a specific audience to whom they market, and thus the products normally are in sync with the audience’s interests. This is how niche personal brands are created, and affiliates are able to attract consumers most likely to act on the promotion.

The consumer

It is the consumer and his purchases that drive affiliate marketing.

Affiliates share with their audience the products on social media platforms, blog posts, websites, etc. The consumers then buy the product, & the seller and the affiliate share the profits. It is the affiliate’s call if they decide to be upfront with the consumer by disclosing that they are receiving commission for the sales they make. Or the consumer might be kept in the dark about the affiliate marketing infrastructure behind their purchase.

But in either of the two ways, consumers rarely end up paying more for the product purchased through affiliate marketing than through traditional routes. Also, the affiliate’s profit is included within the retail price. The consumer, when completes the purchase process, receives the product as normal & unaffected by the affiliate marketing system.

Affiliate Marketing Channels

Most affiliates share common customer engagement practices. These standard methods make the audience engaged and receptive to purchasing promoted products. But different affiliates advertise the products in different ways, playing to their core strength. They take advantage of the several marketing channels they may leverage.

Influencers wield incredible power to impact the purchasing decisions of hundreds and thousands of people. The impressive count of followers they possess makes it easy for them to direct consumers to the seller’s products with the help of social media posts, blogs, and several other interactive tools. They agree to such activities in return for a share of the profits they help to create.

Bloggers are adept at increasing a seller’s conversions with their ability to rank organically in search engine queries. Post sampling the product or service, the blogger proceeds to write a thorough & comprehensive review that promotes the brand in a compelling way. This way they help drive traffic back to the seller’s site.

The bloggers/influencers are compensated in accordance with their reach and how effectively they spread the word about the product’s value, thus helping to improve the seller’s sales. For example, an article on best email marketing services shall include product reviews and affiliate links peppered throughout.

Paid search focused microsites

In order to generate sales, one can develop and monetize microsites that are advertised within a partner site or on a search engine’s sponsored listings. They continue to be distinct and separate from the organization’s main site. On account of their simple, straightforward call to action, microsites lead to increased conversions through focussed, relevant content that caters to a specific audience.

Email marketing might be an old trick, yet it is still effective & a viable source of affiliate marketing income. Email lists are used by some affiliates to promote the seller’s products. While others may leverage email newsletters with in-built hyperlinks leading to products. This earns the affiliates a commission after the consumer purchases the product. A second method is for the affiliate to build an email list over longer periods of time using various campaigns that can collect emails en masse. They then send out promotional emails about the products.

Large media websites

They tend to focus on creating a huge amount of traffic at all times. The aim is to build an empire - a dedicated audience numbering in the millions. The products are pushed through the use of banners and contextual affiliate links – a method that offers superior exposure and improved conversion rates. Thus, large media websites create a top-notch revenue for both the seller and the affiliate.
